General Questions About the Philippines and This Site

Heights above Cebu CityRizal Monument Luneta Park ManilaFor some reason I haven’t figured out there is no link to comment on the pages so I thought I would include this area for general questions. If you have a question about Retiring in the Philippines that I haven’t mentioned yet you can ask it here. I hope I will eventually cover most topics but no need to wait around if you are curious about something now.

This is a fairly new site so I would also welcome comments about the site I am always looking for ways to improve it or make it more informative. I have a couple of new categories and links I will be adding that should be helpful. If you have any suggestions to improve the layout I would like to hear them.

Thank you for your inputs.   Tom

Wasn’t sure where to put this comment but you can delete it or move it since you are the boss . :-) Just wanted you to know that i linked your site through my new blog url . The old site link is still active as well until i get the database moved .

How about backlinking to my new blog so i can see if it’s set up properly and feel free to comment , but be kind as the house is still pretty empty . :-)

Ok I have corrected the link. I’ll try to go by later but if I have to register again what I have to say may not be complimentary. :)

Yes this would be the right place since the link was wrong that is about the site.

I had some things going on which kept me from making any new posts for a while but I should be back on track now. I will be in the Philippines in October but I plan to continue adding new material.

I am really hoping some of you who read these pages will ask some questions or fill in some information I might have missed. I hope you are finding the information you need. Tom

Might be worth adding “links” on this page as flicking through can be a bit time consuming if looking for a certain thing maybe a left/right hand menu?

  6. Tom says:

    Hi Matt,
We had some computer problems while I was there so I lost a lot of online time. The technician is supposed to look at it today. I had a great time. As always I was sorry to go but I left plenty of sunshine behind.

Christmas should be very nice there. I returned to Phoenix yesterday. I hope to be back there about August next year. My bank accounts are open now but investments are down a bit. Time to buy more I think.

I am getting enough content I might add a search feature. I haven’t found a way to put links on the comment page. I might need a different theme for that. All of the post pages should have links to the other pages.

Thank you. I was looking for your e-mail address. Maybe I didn’t look in the right place. :) I know where to find it now. I don’t have as much time as I would like to work on this site so I am trying to put most of the time available into the content. I will probably try to dress it up a little more in the next few months. I will be posting more pictures when I get my photo files organized again.

    Tom,
I found your site through Alan’s site PhilippineHomestaytravel.com

I invite you to visit my site and link to it if you like. I will return the favor.

  10. Tom says:

Sure. I am always glad to link to sites about the Philippines so the visitors here can find other sources for information. 8-) You are also welcome to give your input here.

    Hi there,

Considering a move to Manilla from Oman in the ‘muddle’ east, husband’s job taking us there…

Wondering at opportunities for work for myself, my profession is couturier – women’s wear designer & patternmaker, I also have experience as a fashion stylist and importing/ buying in Australia….

Will it be easy for me to get a work visa? (Can’t get one here, increadibly frustrating, have only been able to work privately from home)

Will it be possible to find well paid (western standard salary) work in fashion – designing, manufacturing, exporting to Aus, etc?

Can you recommend where to go for more information about companies in these fields that pay well, and treat their expat staff fairly according to western standards?

Would you be kind enough to advise if there are social or support groups for Australian expats in the Phillipines?

Sincere thanks for your time & thoughts,

    Cheers, Donna

Hi Donna. The work opportunitys in the Philippines for a foreigner are pretty slim unless you were hired by a foreign company to work there. Wages tend to be low but there are always exceptions.

There are also restrictions on having your own business. There is a list of busineses foreigners are not allowed to operate in. If you are selling locally you are only allowed to own 40% the rest must be owned by Filipinos. If you are producing for export then it is possible for you to own the business outright.

The best place to check would probably be the internet for what companies are operating there. Sorry I don’t have more cheerful news. What you are seeking is not impossible but you will have to do some searching to find it.

On the right side of the main page is a listing of websites. Under Life in the Philippines Sites is Big Jims Philippines Website has a listing of chat groups (Also lots of Photos and Vidieos) I believe there is at least one Australian group there. You can also contact Jim he is Australian and has a lot of time on the ground in the Philippines. 8-)
